![]() Probably as far back as the Muromachi Jidai/Ashikaga Shogunate. The katana has been known as the "warriors soul" since at least as far back as the Sengoku Jidai or around the 1500's. After the Mongol invasions the katana and other melee weapons rose in prominence. This coincides with and was caused by the move away from mounted archery after the Mongol invasions of 12.Īs for the katana being seen as dishonorable, this was only true while archery was at the pinnacle of displays of skill. After this there is a trend of shedding the traditional O yoroi box-type armor and moving to the more form fitting Do maru (O yoroi is hard to fight in). Mostly just mounted archers up until/during the Gempei war perhaps. On that account i want people to realise that the katana actually is a weapon that was generally seen as a dishonerable weapon, while bows and yari (spears) were seen as proper weapons.
